Thom Norton, coach and program director for the Wachusett Mountain junior race team for the past eight years, has been tapped to head the resort’s Ski & Snowboard School. He replaces Bruce McDonald, who steps down after overseeing the school for some 40 years.

“We are thrilled to have Thom carry on the long tradition of excellence that Bruce has created with the Wachusett Mountain Ski and Snowboard School,” said General Manager David Crowley. “Thom will continue to focus on the key programs that have become the cornerstones of the ski and snowboard school – especially our Learn to Turn packages; Polar Kid’s program and Children’s Vacation Clubs and a variety of clinics and group lessons.”

More than 10,000 school kids annually attend the ski area’s after-school programs each winter from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Connecticut.

Norton’s background includes 25 years of ski coaching, instruction, and high level racing. He is also a coach of the U.S. elite ski camps. Norton also has a strong background in cycling and is a former member of the U.S. Cycling Team. A professional bike racer and manufacturer’s representative. He lives in Concord, Mass., with his wife and son.

McDonald, who also has a career as a musician, model, and actor, joined the Wachusett team as a part-time instructor in 1969.  He became Director of Skiing in 1977 and assumed his current position as Director and Vice President of Sales and Snow Sport Services in 1982.

The school has more than 300 instructors and is highly regarded throughout New England.
