New Owners In Place At Thunder Ridge Near Danbury, White Plains
After 20 years of operating Thunder Ridge Ski Area,a family run ski area in Patterson, N.Y., 20 minutes from Danbury, Ct.. and 30 minutes from White Plains, N.Y. Mary and Bob Conklin have announced their retirement as operators of the ski area. New operators already are in place, and they are the current owners of Thunder Ridge, Dean and Wayne Ryder.
The transition from the Conklins to the Ryders is already underway, and everyone involved anticipates a seamless opening and operation of the 2014-15 winter season.
“We built a wonderful business, had a fantastic time doing so, met so many people,” said Mary Conklin. “We had a great time, but it is time to retire. Our children and grandchildren are not local, and we want to spend time visiting them.”
Since 1995 the Conklins have been providing winter skiing and snow boarding, lessons, equipment rentals, catering, pumpkin picking, hay rides, and race camps to local families in the region. The ski area opened each year from December to March, weather permitting. Mary handled the inside activities, while Bob managed the outside.
“We are certain that Dean and Wayne will continue to invest time and money into Thunder Ridge to improve upon what we have accomplished,” said Bob Conklin.
When the Ryders learned that the Conklins planned to retire, they decided to take on the operation of Thunder Ridge as a commitment to the sports of skiing and riding and to the regional community.
“Thunder Ridge provides a unique set of family oriented recreational opportunities to our community,” said Dean Ryder, owner and now one of the new operators as well. “The Ryder family wants to continue providing those opportunities as the Conklins did for so many years. Bob and Mary developed a very strong team of employees, many of who return season after season. We are pleased to have these individuals continue to work at Thunder Ridge. The employees are engaged in preparing for the upcoming season, which we expect to begin in December.”
Mike Krongel of Mirus Resort Capital facilitated transaction negotiations. Mirus Resort Capital, based in Burlington, Mass., is focused on transactions in the resort, recreation and hospitality spaces.
Thunder Ridge offers 32 trails and eight lifts plus a terrain park and night skiing, and is close to major metropolitan areas in New York and Connecticut.
