The spring skiing and riding season rolls on with eight areas turning lifts this weekend.
No need to hang ‘em up quite yet, but the list is indeed getting shorter. There’s skiing and riding in six states. Several resorts have stayed open continuously, while some others have closed during the week, but plan to re-open for the weekend. Here’s the rundown:
New snow in the West is keeping the season alive and well every day at several resorts in California, Colorado, Oregon and Utah. Several other ski areas are playing the “re-open” card on weekends.
Late-season snow storms have been rolling into Utah mountains, making it difficult to hang up the skis and snowboards but easy for resorts to stay open.
The long-pondered connection among seven resorts in the Wasatch Mountains became an official “concept” March 19, as executives at each resort joined hands in support of the project.

The first major snowstorm of the season sent ski racers packing, and powder hounds reaching for fat skis.
“It’s the first powder storm of the season, and the crowd is going wild,” said Emily Moench, communications manager for Snowbird on Wednesday morning. “Powder hounds are chomping at the bit.”
California's Boreal fired up its snowmaking system Thursday night as additional snow fell throughout the Sierra Nevada and Rocky Mountain regions in the west. In Colorado, Loveland Ski Area and Arapahoe Basin started snowmaking operations on Friday evening.
Loveland began making snow for the 2013-14 season just after 6 p.m. Friday.

Qualifying season passholders at Alta Ski Area, Deer Valley Resort, Park City Mountain Resort (PCMR), and Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort are offering three free ski days of lift access at each of the other resorts for the 2013-14 season.
“In like a lion; out like a lamb” you might quote when hearing the news surrounding SkiLink. The controversial 2012 proposal to stick a gondola from Canyons Resort in Park City, Utah, across federal land and over to Solitude Resort in Big Cottonwood Canyon, ran up the flagpole to Washington where it fizzled. But, this is far from over.
