Everyone can easily remember his or her first day of skiing in the early winter with five inches of powder snow, crystal clear, and very cold. Anticipation is in the air as you feel your new skis getting extra grooves in them on the four-inch rocks.
When Averell Harriman was skiing in St. Anton in 1933 and 1934, he became aware of how Hannes Schneider and his ski school was able to keep the Post Hotel and several other smaller pensions open all winter to house his many pupils who came there from all over the world to learn how to ski.
It was nice to congratulate Klaus Obermeyer recently on his 94th birthday. I think he is the ultimate entrepreneur in the American ski industry. He owns and manages the largest ski-only clothing company in America.
