SnoCountry SnoCast: Winter Is Here

A majority of Canada and U.S. resorts will experience cold weather through New Year’s Day, while a few feet of snow may fall in the West.

Western U.S. & Canada

Strong winter storms will pummel western Canada and most of the U.S. Pacific Northwest Thursday to Saturday. Heaviest snowfall will occur across British Columbia (12-24” at Grouse Mountain), northern Washington, Idaho (20”+ at Silver Mountain), and Montana (10-16” at Red Lodge).

In Washington Thursday and Friday, snow will fall above 5,000 feet elevation while rain falls below. Elsewhere, snow will reach to ground level. Through Saturday, 6-12 inches of snow is possible in areas below 5,000 feet but above that level, 12-36” is likely. It will clear Sunday, then weaker systems glide through Monday-Wednesday.

Be careful traveling through Saturday. Snow drifts, low visibility, and wind chill temperatures reaching -30 degrees will be possible.

The Four Corners and Southwest will remain drier than average through Wednesday.

Eastern U.S. & Canada

Cold and mainly dry will be the weather story through Wednesday. Temperatures will remain 10, 20, and possibly 30 degrees colder than average.

With frigid air in place, lake effect snow showers will be likely for most days. Areas east/southeast of the Great Lakes will measure feet within snow bands. Otherwise, smaller weather systems Thursday-Saturday will generate up to four inches across the Midwest, Appalachians, and Northeast Canada.

The Southeast U.S. has potential snow New Year’s Day or Tuesday. This is a fantastic weather pattern for our Southeast resorts such as Appalachian in North Carolina, Massanutten in Virginia, and Canaan Valley in West Virginia.
