World Class Ski Jumping At Pine Mountain Feb. 9-10
It’s one of the more unusual ski weekends in the Midwest. Pine Mountain Resort, near Iron Mountain in Michigan’s remote UP, offers a scenic winter getaway for skiers and snowboarders coupled with an FIS sanctioned Continental Cup jumping event that takes place Feb. 9-10.
The resort is home to the Pine Mountain Ski Jump, which is known throughout the jumping world as one of the best jumping hills on planet Earth. Every February, the top jumpers from around the world flock to Iron Mountain to test their skills against each other. An estimated 12 countries will have jumpers present for the competition. The U.S. record jump of 140 meters/459 feet was set here and still stands.
More than 20,000 spectators will crowd around the bottom of the jump to watch these daring young men “fly.” Live bands will be playing, and tail-gating parties will be taking place in the parking lot. It’s truly a winter spectacle, and the town fills to overflowing. You won’t see anything else like it in the Midwest, or the rest of the country for that matter. Training day is Friday, Feb. 8, which is also a good time to catch the action.
Midweek Escape packages at the resort start from $80 per night and include a night’s stay and two adult lift tickets. The offer is good Sunday through Thursday. Weekend Escape packages start from $349 and include a two-night stay, lift tickets for two days, and a hot breakfast buffet Saturday and Sunday mornings.
A Family Escape package, which starts from $449, includes Friday and Saturday night lodging for a family of four, lift tickets and a hot breakfast buffet both weekend mornings.
Pine Mountain expanded its Bone Yard terrain park last season with additional new features, and created Piney's Playground for tots.
Located on a ridge overlooking the city the ski area has a big 500-foot vertical drop with 27 trails and slopes, two terrain parks, three chairlifts, and two surface tows. Scenic views from the top of the ridge stretch as far as the eye can see.
