Vermont Resorts To Host Spring Events As Winter Keeps A-Coming
At a time when many resorts are usually thinking of their closing ceremonies and skiers and riders are starting to look toward warm weather vacations, the Eastern and Mid-Atlantic region in spring 2014 is changing the paradigm. Lots of snow, deep bases and more of both coming, will make those typical spring events look quite a bit different.
“March in Vermont came in like a lion and is looking to go out the same way with mid-winter conditions blanketing the state as we wrap up the month,” Ski Vermont’s Sarah Wojcik told SnoCountry.com. “We’re still fully open with a few resorts ending their seasons over the next few weeks, and are looking forward to some warmer spring skiing and riding days in April as temperatures are finally expected to rise. We have an amazing base due to great snow in February and March and expect some resorts to hang on into May.”
In Vermont, the spring fun includes an ample number of pond skimming events, in case guests need to chill. Select from the following:
April 5 – Snowshoe Explorer Tour at Bolton Valley, every Saturday from 2-4 p.m. for a guided snowshoe tour on groomed and backcountry trails. $35 per person includes ticket, snowshoes, and guided tour.
April 5 – Mount Snow Winter Brewers Festival, 12-5 p.m., features over 25 breweries and 50 beers. Tickets priced between $15 and $25, depending on when you buy and whether or not you have a lift ticket.
April 5 - Okemo Slush Cup is for costume-clad competitors schussing toward an 80-foot-long pond. Open to the first 125 participants. Also, Okemo has the Splash for Cash, offering one shot to go big.
April 5 – Pond Skimming and Tailgate Cook-off at Smugglers' Notch Resort as the resort hosts pond skimming. The Chillin' and Grillin' Tailgate Cook-off takes place in the resort's upper mountain parking lots.
April 5, 6 – Bear Mountain Mogul Challenge on Outer Limits, Killington Resort, is the Beast of the East’s iconic bump event.
April 12 - Spring Fling Annual Pond Skim at Stratton Mountain Resort, hopefully by then we’ll see goggle tans and t-shirts. Start time is 10 AM.
April 20 – Easter Sunrise Service at Stowe Mountain Resort atop the Gondola on Mount Mansfield.
April 20 - Easter Celebration at Sugarbush Resort, with a brunch at Timbers Restaurant, an Easter egg hunt with the Easter Bunny, and a sunrise Easter service at the Gate House Lodge.
As an illustration of the breadth and depth of this prolonged season, even in Mid Atlantic, Winterplace Ski Resort in West Va., which received eight inches of snow on March 26 that closed area schools, is open through Saturday, March 29, with all 27 trails available.
“We have great coverage. Our terrain parks are open and we still have six tubing lanes,” Winterplace’s Missy Cline told SnoCountry.com. “We’ve actually had a few people here talk about opening a few weekends in April, but I don’t think that will happen.”
This season, however, it is noteworthy just to have that conversation.
