Utah Resorts Are Ikon Pass Ready For New Season
Locals and visitors to Utah who have an Ikon Pass hanging around their necks will get to check out some improvements and upgrades at five Utah resorts that honor the multi-mountain season pass.
Ikon's parent company, Alterra Mountain Company, owns Deer Valley and Solitude so pass holders can ski and ride at those mountains without restrictions. Partnerships with Alta, Snowbird, and Brighton mean Ikon Pass holders get seven days at each -- or five days for Ikon Base Pass.
So, what's new at these five Utah resorts for the 2021-2022 season? Check it out:
Skiers familiar with bottlenecks into Alta's base will have some more space to maneuver as the main feeder run to the bottom Corkscrew has been widened. Four remote-control avalanche explosion towers have been installed on the backside Devil's Castle upper bowl. And Supreme Lift regulars will appreciate more snow fencing to help get trails open sooner after storms.
Next doors, Snowbird celebrates 50 years by concentrating on a more reliable power system this summer, including a cogeneration plant that can produce more than 90% of the resort's electricity on site. On the hill, four remote-control avalanche explosion towers have been put up on the backside of Mineral Basin.
Over in Big Cottonwood Canyon at Brighton, the night skiing trail map expanded over the summer with more lighting on the Snake Creek chair and nearby trails. In the same area, more snowmaking went in for all nights to 9 p.m., and Sundays to 7 p.m.
Skiing and riding on weekends and holidays will get going earlier at neighboring Solitude this winter. Any holder of a valid ticket can hop on any of three chairs out of the base area -- Moonbeam Express, Apex Express, and Link -- at 8 a.m. to get a jump on the crowd.
And over the divide, Deer Valley continues to up its high-end dining with new offerings for lunch and apres-ski in the Snow Park Restaurant at the main base area. There's more snowmaking and new snowcats on the hill, and shuttling around will be easier.
