Few ski and snowboard resorts in the West open up their arms to summer festivals and special events like Mammoth Mountain in the southern Sierra.
Those who make the five-hour drive from the coast -- or fly right into Mammoth Yosemite Airport -- during August will be treated to any of the four-weekend festivals featuring food, drink, and music. The Village at Mammoth and the city of Mammoth Lakes host these events that draw thousands to the high-mountain air and tall pines every summer.
Here's what's on the schedule:
The four-day Mammoth Festival of Beers and Bluesapalooza runs Aug. 5-8 with top blues acts on The Woods at Mammoth Lakes stage, and more than 60 craft breweries from all over the country in booths scattered around town. Twenty-two bands/performers cook up blues, rock, and R&B from Thursday through Sunday, headlined by blues hall-of-Famer Robert Cray.
Next, on Aug. 13-14, the annual Mammoth Margarita Fest features all things tequila. Buy a tequila tasting ticket for both days, or belly up to the many tequila bars set up in the village. Music includes a tribute to Santana by former band member Tony Lindsay, entertainer-producer Jay Bolan, and The Leyenda band.
Head back up on Aug. 20-22 for a more sublime time at the Mammoth Wine Weekend. The annual gathering features more than 30 wineries along the village Wine Walk, Winemakers Dinners at select restaurants, and a decadent Sunday brunch.
Then wrap up the month with rock 'n' roll tribute bands and tons of wine, beer, and food at the Mammoth Rocks & Taste of Sierra festival Aug. 26-28. Eatin' ranges from crepes to tacos to Cubana favs.
