Telemark Events, Clinics Bring Freeheelers To Bromley, Crotched

Bromley TelecastTelemark skiing may be considered old school, but racers coming to Vermont and New Hampshire this winter will be showing off a combination of the giant slalom turns of alpine racing, the distance jumps of ski jumping, and the endurance of Nordic skiing into one format which tests skill, stamina, power and grace. Proponents hope to one day make Telemark racing an Olympic sport.

This classic form of skiing will be featured at the 31st annual Kare Andersen Telemark Festival, Feb. 20-21, at Bromley Mountain. The 2016 U.S. National Telemark Skiing Championships, March 3-6, will bring the best telemark racers from across North America to Crotched Mountain to compete for the men’s and women’s National Championships.

The Bromley festival, one of the oldest Telemark races in the U.S., offers Telemark clinics for all ability levels by the area's top Telemark coaches and après ski parties.

Both events provide opportunities to see the best telemark racers in the country as well as for amateurs to participate in citizen races.

“Bromley has a long tradition of telemark skiing, and is home to the oldest telemark school in the country,” Bromley Telemark Coordinator, Greg Paquin told SnoCountry.com. The tele tradition is strong at Bromley and the event is open to the entire family. Clinic options will include topics appropriate for all ages and levels, beginner to advanced.

At Crotched, racers will compete in three events including the Classic, Sprint Classic, and the Parallel Sprint. The head-to-head parallel competitions are especially spectator friendly and make for exciting viewing regardless of one’s familiarity with the sport. The National Championships are the showcase event for the athletes and is the top level telemark event in the U.S. this year.
