Keepin’ up with ever-changing terrain park trends presents a challenge to all resorts, and Sun Valley is one that is making sure it’s current … and cool.

Sitting in front of the main ski and snowboard area, Dollar Mountain has been “park central,” hosting seven terrain parks and a competition-grade half-pipe on novice and intermediate slopes.

This season, the half-pipe has melted away – until the trend returns – and in its place will be wider variety of features that resort officials say is what the freestyle public wants. Noticeable will be a larger ski- and snowboard-cross course and skateboard park-like features.

“Skiers and riders of all ages can expect a variety of new features like banks, bowls, hips, transitions, mini-pipes and other playful snow features to take over the Dollar landscape,” said Sun Valley’s Nate Sheehan. “(Skiers and riders) will have access to creative features that offer more flexibility and the ability to envision their own lines in a non-traditional terrain park atmosphere.”

The resort wants to get more newbies involved in terrain parks; hence, an offering of smaller features that will get them used to what they will experience when they step up to the larger parks.

Mountain managers also intend to upgrade the “pocket parks” that can be found scattered around Bald Mountain, often associated with the Adventure Trails that veer off the main tracks and into the trees.

Also at Sun Valley, crews have spent the summer renovating the venerable Sun Valley Inn with a tip-to-toe remodeling of rooms and restaurants.
