If you are heading to a mountain resort to enjoy golf or tennis and want the kids to have a great time in the outdoors, summer camps for kids and teens are just the ticket.

The camps focus on educational fun and outdoor activities that challenge as part of facilitating growth. They offer a huge variety to activities that kids love and some even offer camps for families.

Here’s a sampler to get you thinking of ways to make this summer extra memorable.

In the East

Bretton Woods Canopy Tour

Imagine climbing a granite cliff to an elevation of 3000 feet to enjoy mountain views and a sense of accomplishment. The new Teen Adventure Camps (ages 13-17) at Bretton Woods feature rock climbing, canopy tours, hiking, mountain biking, archery, fly-fishing, and wilderness survival skills. The 9 to 5 camps are different each day and come in one-, two- or three-day options.

There’s nothing like quality time when it comes to having “fun as a family,” and Family Camp at Mount Snow offers a day camp that features unplugging (no devices allowed during camp) so families can reconnect during meals and through activities like mountain biking, boating, golf, yoga, beach volleyball and guided hikes. During “parent time” (golf, tennis, etc.) kids have their choice of activities with camp counselors.

Spokesman Thad Quimby adds, “Meals are prepared by chefs and since you return to your modern lodgings after day camp, there’s no need for roughing it.” It’s an all-inclusive package with lodging, meals, and no work for you. Tip: use family camp to host a no-work family reunion.

Mount Snow also offers Outdoor Exploration Day Camps for kids entering first through ninth grades. Activities include outdoor adventures, visits to local areas and attractions, and exploring creativity through arts and crafts.

Western Sampler

Mt. Bachelor mountain biking

“Screaming down the mountain” is the rallying cry for the lucky 8 to 15 year-olds who attend Mt. Bachelor's Gravity Bike Camp, featuring instruction and a skills park, lift-accessed downhill trails, and single-track cross-country trails. The five-day midweek sessions (all abilities) run from July 18 through August 26. Daily bus service from Bend Park and Ride makes this convenient for central Oregon locals as well as visitors

Woodward Copper

Woodward at Copper in Colorado offers skiing and snowboarding summer camps with afternoons spent at the indoor training facility — trampolines, foam pits, ramps — and mornings on snowy outdoor terrain parks, one of which is serviced by a new lift, notes Copper’s Morgan Whitehouse. Add skateboard, BMX, mountain biking, scooter, and cheer camp options and there’s a week to satisfy any active camper plus there’s digital media camp for the techie! Accompanying activities range from bumper boating to rock climbing. Overnight and day-camp options.

In the Midwest

Boyne Mountain golf

While parents enjoy golf or the spa, Fritz's Adventure Camp at Boyne Mountain is all about active, outdoor-oriented excitement for kids ages 3 to 12 years, notes Erin Ernst. Adventures range from a day at Avalanche Bay Indoor Waterpark to nature hikes, field trips, crafts, and games. Golf, tennis, horseback riding, ziplining, and cookouts are also featured in half- and full-day options.

At Boyne Highlands Adventure Camp for ages 3-13, swimming in resort pools, off-site field trips, and visits by special guests combine with golf lessons twice a week and a full-day field trip on Fridays to provide exciting and educational opportunities. Full, half-day, and theme week options.
