Sugarfest This Weekend; K2 High Ollie Contest At Ober Gatlinburg Dec. 20

Sugar Mt.

The Southeast lights up for the holidays with two major events on tap. Sugar Mt. in Avery County, N.C., hosts its Sugarfest, while Ober Gatlinburg in Gatlinburg, Tenn., tests your mettle with a K2 High Ollie Contest.

Sugarfest Dec. 14-16 claims to have something for everyone including skiers, snowboarders, ice skaters, foodies, music lovers, families, weekend warriors, any type of winter shopper, and Olympic athlete fans.

A highlight of the week is a free performance Friday night at 7 p.m. by Olympic silver medalist Paul Wylie on the resort’s outdoor ice rink. Wylie took the silver medal at the 1992 Winter Olympic Games in Albertville, France. He was World Jr. Champion at 16 in 1981 and was inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 2008. A hot chocolate bar will be available Friday night at the ice rink.

The Sugarfest Rail Jam is set for Sunday, Dec. 16. Contact Mark Newton at Alpine Ski Center (828-898-9701 x221) for details.

Across the way in Tennessee, K2 returns with another “Pop This” High Ollie Contest Dec. 20. The contest is being amped up this year with a giveaway of a new K2 SLAYBLADE snowboard and some limited edition K2 skate decks and more. Skiers will play a game of Snow Dice with prizes from Line Skis. Popping starts at 1 p.m.

Meanwhile, Ober Gatlinburg's Lounge will host local musicians performing all ski season long. Music begins Dec. 13 with the Griffin Brothers Band Mondays; Dueling Pianos Tuesdays; Karaoke with Carilee Wilson Wednesdays; Kevin McQuire and Friends Thursdays through Saturdays; and the Griffin Brothers Sundays.
