Spring Highlights Top Bump Runs In Rocky Mountains

Bump skier TellurideAs spring skiing season arrives, you usually find more VW-size moguls than snorkel-deep powder at Rocky Mountain resorts. Combine with warm bluebird days, and you’ve got prime time for bump-a-holics.

Even when new snow falls, the steepest trails and slopes on mountains of the Rockies mogul-up quickly and, save for an occasional winch cat intruder, stay that way until the snow flies again.

Here are some of the best bump runs around: They are all long thigh-burners that demand commitment and conditioning from all those who push off from the top into these mounding seas of moguls.

Pallavicini at Arapahoe Basin. No list of mogul monsters can be complete without iconic runs under the Pallavicini chair. Turbo, Roller Coaster, International all merge into one serious mogul field.

Mary Jane at Winter Park. Everything is “black” on the skier’s right side of the Challenger chair in the Mary Jane region of the mountain. Think you’re in shape? Take on Derailer or Railbender to find out for sure.

The Plunge at Telluride. Staying in town? Get ready for an end-of-the-day test with these famous runs down to Main Street. The resort does winch cat some but leaves plenty of leg-burning bumps, and both chair and gondola serve these steepies.

Longhorn at Taos Ski Valley. Al’s Run gets the most press, but locals know that Longhorn on the east side of the lower mountain is the true test. Resembles a New England run with its narrow, winding sections.

High Rustler at Alta. Famous for its first-chair powder, High Rustler gets lots of traffic and moguls-up as quickly as any run on the Utah mountain. A great run to show off mogul technique as base-loungers can see it from top to bottom.
