Snowboarder Buried Under Mt. Hood Ice; Body Recovered

Mt. Hood Ice Tunnel

A snowboarder missing since Saturday was found dead, buried under a large piece of ice as an ice tunnel on Mt. Hood, Ore. collapsed around him. He was identified as Collin Backowski, 25, of Pines, Colo, according to various news reports.

Rescuers with chain saws and other tools chipped away at ice and snow Sunday to recover Backowski’s body. He was with five companions when the collapse occurred. The others tried to dig him out, but the conditions were described as “thick as concrete.”

Hood Country Sheriff’s Office’s Tiffany Peterson told the Associated Press that searchers found Backowski’s body where he had been buried by 8-10 feet of snow and ice. The search was halted late Saturday night for safety purposes of the rescuers, but resumed Sunday morning. Rescuers included an all-volunteer group known as the Hood River Crag Rats.

The ice tunnel was on the White River Glacier that begins about 6,000 feet up the south side of Mt. Hood. His companions took photos of the scene to help rescuers locate the spot.
