Record-setting snowfall in February blanketed the West, gave powderhounds all that they could ask for in a ski and snowboard season, and kept resort owners smiling from ear to ear.
Snow plows and front loaders worked overnight in the last month to keep roads and parking lots open. A recent spate of avalanches along the I-70 corridor in Colorado high country closed the interstate for a time, and nearby Arapahoe Basin had to shut down the lifts for a couple of days because of avalanche potential.
Now, as we settle into the last part of the season, there will be plenty underfoot as the snow softens, the sun gets higher, and skiers and riders begin to shed their winter coats.
Forecasters still say more snow in March, the snowiest month of the season in Rockies and elsewhere.
