SnoCountry SnoCast: Tricks and Treats in the Forecast

Eldora-Ski_FB Eldora Mountain Resort will be opening Friday, November 1 – their earliest opening in more than two decades!  Eldora picked up 15” of snow on October 24.

We're saying goodbye to October’s tricks, and flipping the calendar to treats in November. The east will get a cool down, while the west benefits from an early start to the season.

Let’s start in the west where another snowstorm has just wrapped up in the Rockies. October featured colder than average weather for most of the western U.S., allowing several snowy storms. The snow pack is off to a healthy start out west, allowing many ski areas to open earlier than previous years.

This week was no exception, as the mountains from Montana to New Mexico picked up fresh snow. The Colorado Rockies took the bulk, with a fresh 10-20” reported at many ski areas this week. Good news for Monarch, Eldora, and Wolf Creek, which will open up for skiing this week in Colorado. Sipapu in New Mexico has also benefited from the cold and snow, opening on Halloween! Nakiska in Alberta will also open up this weekend, thanks to recent October snow.

Look for another system to drop in from the Canadian Rockies, then to Montana, Idaho and Wyoming by early next week.

In the east, October has had more tricks than treats, but that is likely to turn around into November. The storm that just walloped the west will leave several inches across the Midwest ski areas on Halloween. New snow will fall on Shanty Creek and Crystal Mountain in Michigan. This storm wraps in colder air to New York and New England by the weekend, with some wet peak snow possible Friday in an otherwise warm system. Another cold shot of air squeezes out some Adirondack and New England flakes Sunday. This should help segue the east into a colder pattern, allowing ski areas to crank up the snow making efforts, and hopefully open the door to more natural snow into mid November.
