SnoCountry’s Best Offbeat Summer Fun At Western Resort Bases

Mountain Coaster at SnowbirdThe scenic chairlift ride, the downhill mountain bike run and the alpine hiking trek have long been standard fare at summer mountain resorts – but the focus has moved off-mountain lately.

Many resorts in the West have cranked up what they offer for warm-weather fun around their base areas. Now, it’s common to find ziplines, trampolines, climbing walls – and more -- set up around the bottom of the mountain.

Copper Mt. Go KartsSnoCountry.com took a look at some of the base-area recreation available throughout the West this summer, and came up with some unusual activities:

Copper Mountain. Multiple transportation options at the Colorado resort, including one-hour, $15 rentals of two-wheel, scooter-bike Digglers for around town. There’s also go-karts, bumper boats and hydro-bikes to keep you on the move.

Snowbird. The Mountain Coaster adds a twist to alpine sliding Pop Jets at Jackson Holewith a 3,100-foot track through the mixed forest on the south slope above Snowbird. A single ride costs $17 (lap companion $8) or included in day pass.

Jackson Hole. If you get heated up bungee jumping or ropes course-ing at the Wyoming resort, seek out the Pop Jets that shoot cooling streams of water into the air around the Village Commons. This summer cool-down is free.

Mt. Hood SkiBowl. Would-be NASTAR or Indy racers can test their driving skills on the Malibu Raceway at the base of the Oregon resort. A five-minute spin around the twisting track costs $19 ala carte, or included in day pass.

Homewood. Being right on the shore of Lake Tahoe makes it possible for Homewood Resort to rent paddleboards and kayaks off its own beach. Also unusual are drive-in movies on Saturdays. Cars cost $15 but, if you walk or bike in, it’s free.
