SnoCountry's Best Mountain Ski Shops

Footloose Sports Mammoth Lakes

To be one of the best mountain shops, it helps to be ensconced near the base of one of the best mountains, as that’s what ensures a veteran staff that lives, eats and breathes the sport.  Little wonder, then, that our short-list of the crème de la crème are proximate to the best skiing in their respective regions.

To make our cut, a shop has to have superior technical skills, excellent customer service and a long history of supplying both.  To spread the love around, we’ve selected an avatar of excellence in four of America’s major ski regions: New England, Mid-west, Rockies and Far West.

Footloose Sports - Mammoth Lakes, California

Sven Coomer, the godfather of modern alpine boot design, founded Footloose to test his pioneering ideas about custom insoles and inner boots.  As currently operated by Corty Lawrence and Tony Colasardo, Footloose has retained its five-star reputation for state-of-the-art boot fitting skills.

Bootdoctors Telluride

Bootdoctors – Telluride, Colorado

In his role as a lecturer for MasterFit University, Bob Gleason has probably taught more of America’s best boot fitters than any other man alive. Imagine how well trained the staff must be at the Bootdoctors’ stores in Telluride, where Gleason is on site to set the standard for excellence – when he isn’t off skiing.

Pierce Ski and Skate

Pierce Skate & Ski – Bloomington, Minnesota

Bloomington may not be at the base of a big mountain, but one look at the roster of world-class racing talent that has relied on the cutting-edge counsel of Pierce Skate & Ski over the years, and you’d assume it was.  Pierce is rightly renowned for their grasp of the technical details that helps to mold great skiers.

Basin Sports Killington

Basin Sports – Killington, Vermont

Every ski shop claims it’s staffed with boot-fitting “experts” who will custom-fit you; then there are the rare shops like Basin Sports where three certified pedorthists can practically build a boot from scratch around your foot.  Boot Department Manger Ray Garrett has been with Basin since 1987, so there isn’t a foot he hasn’t fit.
