Mt. Hermon, Israel-Lebanon

A news report from GlobalPost.com tells of an incident last week when a man was shot and injured at Mount Hermon (Jabal al-Sheikh) along Lebanon’s border with Syria.

Syrian border guards using light machine guns reportedly shot at the skiers, a security official told Agence France-Presse. Three of the skiers were Lebanese, while one was Swiss.

The injured man was identified as Antoine Hajj, 40, from Lebanon. He was taken to a hospital in Rashaya with a gunshot wound in his shoulder. News reports said the skiers were fired upon when Syrian soldiers mistook them for smugglers.

“Once they came under fire from the Syrian army post, the skiers started screaming to the to hold their fire,” a source toldReuters.

This was apparently the first cross-border shooting in that part of Lebanon, though Syrian soldiers have opened fire at other times across the border saying they ere targeting rebels and weapons smugglers.

United Nations estimates more than 9,000 people have been killed as violence spread across Syria since the anti-regime protests erupted in March 2011.
