Ski The Sea At Camden Snow Bowl; Expansion Underway
You might not expect to find a challenging little ski area nestled into the rocky coast of Maine, but the Camden Snow Bowl offers the best of both worlds for those who can’t decide between a seaside and mountain getaway. Camden is the only ski area in the country that features views of the Atlantic from its lifts and trails.
The Snow Bowl is in the midst of a major expansion. The $8 million redevelopment began in 2014 with the replacement of a handle tow with a conveyor lift, moving their existing double chair, and the installation of a 4,000-foot triple purchased from Shawnee Peak.
Terrain was increased from 45 to 60 acres, including a new beginner area, glades, and wider trails for an expansive view of Camden Harbor, the peaks of Mount Desert Island in the distance.
The area’s redevelopment has been a public-private partnership between the Ragged Mountain Foundation and the Town of Camden. Three years ago, voters approved a $2 million bond, with the remaining $6 million coming in private donations to the Foundation. “We’re really focused on quality of life here,” Camden Community Development Karen Brace Director told SnoCountry.com.
The Ragged Mountain Ski Club supports the mountain with funds to offer hundreds of local kids free lessons and rentals for the fourth grade program, as well as a freestyle and competitive racing program.
A new lodge will be built over the next two years to function as a community recreational center for the midcoast region. “The community has realized what a resource the ski area can be, as well as an economic driver for the area,” Snow Bowl General Manger Landon Fake told us.
In addition to skiing, the Snow Bowl offers Nordic, fat bike and snowshoe trails as well as a wooden toboggan chute. They just hosted the National Tobaggan Championships
The small-town Maine character of the downtown is not your typical ski town. The village offers a wide variety of lodging options, award-winning restaurants, and harborside shopping and entertainment. For a boutique hotel with Maine sensibility, try the Lord Camden Inn, in the center of town activity. The Camden Harbour Inn's AAA Four Diamond restaurant Natalie's combines impeccable European style and the welcoming spirit of New England. 40 Paper serves modern Italian cuisine, hand-made cocktails and craft beer.
