Ready For Down Under Sliding? Mt Hutt, N.Z. Plans June 15 Start
Canterbury’s Mt Hutt ski area in New Zealand’s South Island recently received its second major snowfall in two weeks. Opening day is set for June 15.
The latest storm dropped 20cm (just under 8 inches) over the entire mountain.
“The Mt Hutt snowmaking department will fire up the guns from mid next week and hopefully these cool temperatures stick around and should make for some excellent conditions,” says General Manager James Urquhart.
A bulldozer already was clearing the drifts at Rakaia Saddle to provide access to the blocked base building car park. Maintenance personnel had to walk 2.5km (about 1.5 miles) into the ski area from Rakaia Saddle after the latest storm.
Seasonal management started work in early May and staff members had begun the task of sorting through staff positions for this winter.
