Park City Mountain Resort Bowls Reopen After Agreement

Resort officials have dropped the ropes on some of Park City Mountain's best Alpine terrain, which has been closed for more than three years.

With a short hike, Scott's Bowl, West Bowl, and three double-blacks are now open for skiers and riders who are looking for some wide-face steeps off the highest ridge at the resort. Access is off the Jupiter double fixed-grip, with a ridge traverse above Main Bowl and East Scott's Bowl and a short hike up a saddle to reach reopened terrain.

The reopening of 60 acres to the Jupiter Bowl area will be welcomed by the experts on a 7,200-acre mountain that is predominantly blue rated. Hotshots tend to spend their days on Park City's highest and least crowded terrain below 10,026-foot Jupiter Peak, between McConkey's six-pack express and Jupiter chair.

Late in 2018, resort owner Vail Resorts abruptly closed off the area after failing to come to a lease agreement with landowner Silver King Mining Company. Most of Park City Mountain sits on private land that was cut up into thousands of mining claims in the 19th century. Entities like Silver King Mining bought up all the claims once the mines closed down, and has leased it to Park City Mountain and former The Canyons for skiing.

After a 14-year lease expired in 2018, the two parties couldn't renew. To skiers left off the top of the Jupiter chair, Scott’s Bowl, Pinecone, and Two Goons runs were roped off with “stop” signs. The closure meant no access to the upper portion of Pinecone Ridge or backcountry off the north side of the ridge.

The former lease was negotiated between former owner Powdr Corp. and Silver Mining. Ironically, it was the expiration of a lease that led to the purchase of Park City Mountain and The Canyons by Vail Resorts in 2014 -- and ultimately the consolidation of the two mountains under the Park City Mountain brand.
