Northeast Gets First Tease Of Winter Snows

Stratton 10812

Pick your location across the Northeast and a number of ski resorts were admiring the first snows of the 2012-13 season.

The dusting of about an inch revved spirits at Stratton Mt. in southern Vermont, though the resort isn’t scheduled to open for another 40-plus days. The same sights greeted voyeurs at Mad River Glen and Killington to the north and across the way in the New York Adirondacks at Whiteface at Lake Placid.

There were other sightings as well, so it’s OK to get excited. There obviously needs to be more snow, guns doing their thing, and cold temperatures hanging on before any resort gets the urge to go full throttle and open.

Still, Midwest skiers and riders got an early taste as Wild Mountain, Minn. opened Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012 – the first in the nation. See our story.
