N.J. To Host Super Bowl But Mountain Creek Has Game -- $10,000 For Kicks
It will literally be the coolest Super Bowl ever. Set in the N.J. Meadowlands, Denver and Seattle will battle for football supremacy on Feb. 2 in a championship game that the NY/NJ Super Bowl Host Committee is calling “the first outdoor, cold weather Super Bowl”. The NFL’s feature event has never been played outdoors this far north.
So, it figures that a savvy resort, in the shadow of MetLife Stadium, is picking up the gridiron theme and taking it to the house. Mountain Creek is calling this local, global event the Snow Bowl.
Located 33 miles from the game site, the resort’s pre-game festivities begin Saturday night, Feb. 1, with a concert by The Nerds in Red Tail Lodge.
“We’re definitely getting pumped for the Snow Bowl – especially with all the fresh snow we’ve gotten,” Mountain Creek’s Susie Kalgren told SnoCountry.com. “We had a fantastic weekend for skiing and riding, with more snow showers coming. We just hosted our first giant slalom of the season on Bear Peak, and we’ll hold the N.J. Special Olympics prior to the Snow Bowl.”
Game day brings an on-snow tailgate party, also at Red Tail Lodge, featuring six Super Bowl-caliber championship grill teams, along with food and beverage specials.
This is the prelude to the $10,000 Mountain Creek Field Goal Kick, to be held outside the lodge using an authentic NFL goalpost. Games and qualification take place at various distances and by age from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a chance to advance to the finals.
There will be 10 or more kicks for “major prizes” but there will be just one boot for the 10-grand.
After the Snow Bowl check has been presented to the winner, here’s the real kicker: the resort’s trails will be open from 3-9 p.m., and anyone attired as a football player, cheerleader, official, or super fan can ski and ride free in that time frame. But if you’d rather stay inside, there will be Snow Bowl viewing parties of the big game in the base lodge. Kickoff is set for 6:30.
Mountain Creek is fully committed to their “super” event, to the point where they have invested in a television commercial and video to push the event.
With the Super Bowl meeting the Snow Bowl, topped by some fresh flakes, those considering overnight stays may want to stretch out the weekend. Snow yourself in for three nights or more and save 15 to 25 percent in Grand Cascades Lodge, Minerals Resort or Mountain Creek. Call 973-827-5996, Ext. 2.
