New Mexico's Sipapu To Install First New Chair In Five Years; Designed For Families

Sipapu NMSipapu Ski & Summer Resort -- the New Mexico ski and snowboard mountain known for long seasons and beginner friendliness -- will put in a new chairlift this summer to serve more of the mountain's easier terrain.

The first four-seater at Sipapu, the new lift will rise out of the base area just west of green Lower Bambi, and drop skiers and riders off where intermediate Rolling Rock and Butterfly trails meet. A new trail will be cut under the lift line.

“We are building this lift for families,” said Sipapu’s managing partner James Coleman. “It is perfect for parents and kids to ride together, and it gives those who are learning easy access to some of our best beginner terrain.”

The 330-foot chairlift gives skiers and ‘boarders further evidence that a new ownership group, which bought Sipapu along with Purgatory and Arizona Snowbowl this year, has the resources to upgrade the mountain.

In particular, Sipapu has already put in two magic carpets up its easiest slopes off the base. All these lifts add more access to easier terrain – facilities aimed at attracting more families and first-timers to the 200-acre, 1,000-vertical “snow pocket” in the southern Sangre de Cristos.

Part of that effort is a free lesson with a lift ticket for newcomers. Also, the Durango-based ownership now has a Power Pass season ticket for unlimited skiing and riding at Purgatory, Arizona Snowbowl, Sipapu and Pajarito Mountain, which it manages.
