New Medjet Ski Plan Offers Trip Home After Injuries
Ski accidents are not something that’s fun to discuss. But they happen. MedjetAssist has just launched a new program for skiers and snowboarders protecting those injured on ski slopes away from home.
Here’s how it works: Medjet reviews an injured member’s condition with attending physicians when hospitalized more than 150 miles away from home, virtually anywhere in the world. The company then arranges medical air transport to the hospital of the patient’s choice. There are no health restrictions, co-pays or cost limitation and no additional charges whatsoever after a membership fee is paid. A 15 percent discount applies until Feb. 28, 2013.
“The value of a Medjet membership to skiers lies in the peace of mind associated with having a contingency plan in the event of an unexpected accident or illness,” Medjet Vice President and Chief Operating Officer John Gobbels told SnoCountry.com.
“Many travelers think that the medical evacuation component of their travel insurance or platinum cards already provide a plan should an accident occur,” he said. “Unfortunately, while such products provide important benefits, there are restrictions regarding medical transfer that could leave the consumer wishing they had additional protection. A Medjet membership closes that gap,” Gobbels said.
Gobbels cites the case of Dr. Pamela McClain as an example. This avid skier was on vacation in Aspen, Colo. and hit a mogul that sent her spinning in the air, shattering her leg in 12 places. She needed emergency surgery and medevac transport home to Birmingham, Ala. She said her husband made one call, and even though it was New Year’s Day, Medjet took care of everything. Her transport cost was $19,000, but her out-of-pocket costs were $0.
New annual Ski Enthusiast memberships run $220 if purchased by Feb. 28 (regularly $260). Family memberships are $335 (regularly $395). Families are defined as primary member, partner or spouse and up to five dependent children up to the age of 19, or 23 if a full-time student.
