Midwest March Brings Longer, Warmer Days And Carnivals

It’s been a great winter across the Heartland. Lots of snow still on the slopes, longer days to enjoy them, and many areas celebrate the season with spring carnivals. SnoCountry takes a look.

Boyne Mountain is hosting Kid’s Festival Weekend, March 8-10, and Boyne Highlands is hosting the tenth annual Brew-Ski Festival. Lodging packages are available for both events. Krazy Daze happens at the Highlands Saturday, March 16, and Carnival Weekend, March 15-17 takes place at the Mountain. Slaloms, jump the pond competitions, face painting, costume competitions and live music.

Nubs Nob hosts Mardi Gras March 23. Fun and games for all, including the Soaker Cup, costume contest, Crazy Couples, races and Petoskey Steel Drum Band on the deck.

Crystal Mountain is celebrating sun and snow with March at the Mountain. The Spring Carnival, which includes the cardboard classic and slush cup, takes place Saturday, March 9. Saturday, March 16, is Celts and Kayaks featuring an on slope downhill kayak race. Retro Weekend takes place Saturday, March 23 with a mountain run, bike races and slopeside music. Sundays, March 17, 24 and 31 is 5-for-$50 when five people ski for one price. You can’t beat an all-mountain $10 lift ticket. The resort is offering 25-percent off peak season lodging rates through the rest of the season in limited quantities.

Shanty Creek Cardboard Classic.(Shanty Creek)

Shanty Creek is hosting the Bell’s Brewery Slush Cup Saturday, March 9, including a frozen fish toss and shovel races. The Short’s Brewing Cardboard Classic takes place Saturday, March 16, and you can only use tape and glue to hold it together.

Caberfae Peaks is hosting their Spring Carnival Saturday, March 16, including a costume parade, rail jam, big air, live music and an outdoor snowbar and grill. Sleep and ski packages start from $69 per person, double occupancy.

Ski Brule, Michigan’s UP, hosts the Brule Bash March 23-24, with a long list of fun events. Come in costume and lift tickets are half-price both days. The overall winner receives a 2019-20 season pass.

Big Snow Resort, also the UP, is holding Mountain Top Music Fest March 15-16, featuring Midwest roots bands, and the famed bikini races. Lodge rooms from $71 per night.

Minnesota’s Giant Ridge is holding their Spring Carnival March 16. Events include a slush cup, an outdoor barbeque with live music, and costume contest. March mid-week special, Sunday-Thursday nights, stay three nights and get the third night free at The Lodge at Giants Ridge.
