It’s not often an attractive offer for Midwest skiers and riders comes along including airfare, but Chicago skiers and riders including those in northern Illinois and southeastern Wisconsin should check out the latest offer from Michigan’s Homestead Resort and Bay Mountain.
Fly Manistee, which flies out of Chicago’s Midway International airport, is offering round trip airfares starting from $129 per person, depending on the departure date, and is waiving baggage handling fees for skis and snowboards. It’s approximately a one-hour drive in a rental car to the resort where a family with children under the age of 17 will save even more. Each child receives a complimentary lift ticket for each paying adult.
Homestead lift and lodging packages start from $40 per person, per night with hotel accommodations. Add on a daily Mountaineer breakfast to help kick-start the day and rates start from $52 per person. Lift tickets are good from arrival to departure. The package is available until the resort closes in March.
Cross country skiing and snowshoeing packages start from $42 per person, per night and include a hearty box lunch from Cavanaugh’s and a Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Park pass.
Located in the heart of the National Lakeshore, Bay Mountain offers the best Lake Michigan views of any resort in the Wolverine State. A broad expanse of steely blue water, often filled with ice floes, fills the view and the Manitou Islands seem to bob on the horizon. The resort, which is only open Friday, Sunday and Saturday during ski season, offers a 375-foot vertical drop, three chairlifts, and 16 runs.
It’s a great family resort with trails converging on the small village. It’s also one of a few ski areas in the Midwest to limit lift ticket sales insuring uncrowded slopes, another plus for small skiers. A variety of lodging and restaurants are scattered around the village.
