March Marks Start Of Party Season At Colorado Resorts; Shed Some Layers
Winter’s cold is loosening its grip on the Rockies as the sun stays in the sky longer, and skiers and snowboarders begin to shed a few layers of clothing. The coming of March also means it’s time to party in the out-of-doors at Colorado resorts.
From fundraisers to formal and informal competitions to beer-drenched après ski, the mountains of Colorado will be alive as the 2014-2015 skiing and riding season sees the end in sight – and gear up for the final bacchanals.
Here’s some samples of what’s happening in the month of March:
Aspen-Snowmass. In its 15th year, Bud Light Spring Jam fills three weekends (March 13-29) with freestyle leaps under the lights and musical interludes all over both towns.
Eldora. Skiers and riders who dress up in vintage, retro outfits win prizes March 14. There will be Romp Skis for demos and plenty of music at the base.
Loveland. March 28 signals the return of the annual scavenger hunt sponsored by New Belgium beer. The $10 entry fee goes to the Alliance for Sustainable Colorado and puts everyone on the hill looking for hidden prizes.
Powderhorn. Though not in March, it should noted that night skiing debuts for the Feb. 27-28 weekend on Lower Pacemaker and the terrain park. On March 8, would-be racers can test their skills on the unique banked slalom course – the precursor of ski-snowboard cross races.
Steamboat. The U.S. Freestyle Championships come to the northern Colorado resort on March 27-29 – the first of two years at Steamboat. The Park Smalley Freestyle Complex, named for a pioneer in freestyle skiing, will host aerial and mogul competitions for the best Americans in the sport.
Sunlight. On March 6, lifts run from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. as skiers and riders try to lap the mountain as many times as their legs will let them in 10 hours. Team registration of $150 goes to Sunlight Ski Patrol and the family of a fallen patroller.
Telluride. Lots of music on March 28-29, plus Bikini Slalom and Luau at Gorrono Ranch at the southwestern Colorado resort.
Breckenridge. The Breck Spring Fever event kicks off March 11 and runs every day until closing on April 19, with music and promotions all month. On March 28, the resort goes old school with a “throwback halfpipe” competition on a six-foot pipe that is a replica of the first halfpipe at Breckenridge in 1985.
