Although it's been an up and down weather pattern across the Heartland and Great Lakes, across the northern tier they are in good shape heading into March.

All of the Minnesota and Wisconsin ski areas are operating and many fully open. The Badger State’s Granite Peak plans on staying open through mid-April, and at Minnesota’s Lutsen Mountains the snowpack is over five feet. They plan on staying open through April.

Three of four Ohio ski areas remain open, Boston Mills/Brandywine, Mad River Mountain and Snow Trails, while Alpine Valley has closed for the season. Hidden Valley in Missouri has closed, but Snow Creek in the northwest corner remains fully open.

In Illinois Chestnut Mountain remains fully open with a good base while Snowstar, Four Lakes and Villa Oliva have given up the season.

Five Michigan ski areas, Swiss Valley, Timber Ridge and The Homestead Resort in the Lower Peninsula, and surprisingly Norway Mountain in the UP have closed for the season. The rest of the Michigan ski resorts remain open and in good shape looking forward to a good March, and some like Boyne Mountain, Nubs Nob, Ski Brule, Mount Bohemia and Marquette Mountain plan on staying open into April.

Indiana’s two ski areas, Paoli Peaks and Perfect North Slopes have closed for the season. Perfect North finished up this past weekend in style hosting their Spring Carnival and Nick Goepper Homecoming celebration. The Olympic silver medalist grew up skiing here.

Bottom line is to check the SnoCountry Snow Reports for the latest snow conditions and any closures. Get out and enjoy the slopes while you can. Spring is my favorite time of the year to ski. What’s not to like about longer hours, sunny days and soft snow.
