U.S. Olympian Libby Ludlow hopes her new children’s alphabet book, A-B-Skis, will help youngsters fall in love with the magical world of skiing just as she did when she was a kid.

From A to Z, this playful introduction to skiing is designed to instill a lifelong love for skiing. “It’s got all of the elements that I believe are at the heart of the sport. It ranges from hot chocolate breaks to using your edges to absorbing the amazing experience of being outside. Then some ski-specific quirks  - like a yard-sale crash. It runs the full gamut from life lessons to ski instruction to outdoor appreciation,” Ludlow told SnoCountry.com.

The colorful illustrations by PSIA ski instructor Nathan Jarvis pique kid’s curiosity for the winter wonderland that awaits them on the slopes, while playful rhymes guide kids through everything they can expect on a typical ski day.

Although her own toddler and her deep love of skiing as a professional ski racer was part of the inspiration and motivation for the book, Ludlow said her passion for skiing stems from her early childhood experiences. “I just remember the mountain being the most just gigantic and awe-inspiring magical playground. As a kid it’s just an amazing, special experience,” she told us.

With her passion for skiing still strong ten years after retiring from the U.S. Ski Team, and thinking about introducing her toddler to the sport, Ludlow said she realized that having expectations and information in advance can help a young person to transition into a new experience, and hopes to provide a book that speaks to skiing in a way that kids will love and benefit from.

“A-B Skis is an opportunity for adults to share with their kids or grandkids, nieces or nephews, their passion for skiing. I think there is a lot in the book that will really appeal to skiers just because it’s such a special sport, such a special community,” Ludlow said.

Ludlow added that at the end of the book kids and their parents will find a section dedicated to top 10 tips for a day on the hill - ranging from attitudinal things like making sure its fun, to practical suggestions on how to teach skiing.

“To me, an adult’s primary job when it comes to introducing kids to a new sport, is to make sure they love it for life. A-B-Skis makes it easier for adults to share the stoke of skiing with their little ones.”

By using Kickstarter to launch A-B-Skis, Ludlow is collecting the orders needed to finalize her self-publishing push.
