UPDATED Wednesday, Nov. 9: Loveland Ski Area becomes the second ski and snowboard mountain in the Rockies as the resort is all prepped and ready for opening on Thursday (Nov. 10).

California's Mammoth Mountain will also open Thursday. First chair will load at 8:30 a.m. The area plans to operate three lifts serving top-to-bottom terrain. Meanwhile, a number of other resorts, including Breckenridge and Arizona Snowbowl have pushed back opening days plans until colder weather arrive.

Loveland’s snowmakers have finally won the battle with unseasonably warm temps and meager precipitation, and the ropes will drop for a mile-long run from top to bottom. Portions of Catwalk, Mambo and Homerun have been coated with sufficient cover to handle eager early-birds.

Crews at the Continental Divide ski area started making snow about a month ago, but stretches of warm daytime weather forced them to stop. It was the abnormally warm daytime temps, said a Loveland spokesman, that made snowmaking difficult.

Loveland will join its neighbor, Arapahoe Basin, as the only ski and snowboard mountains open in Colorado. A-Basin started up two weeks ago with a single lift and run on an 18-inch base.

Breckenridge has announced that lifts will start spinning when they have enough manmade or natural snow; no date given, and Keystone is the same. Copper Mountain still says Nov. 18.

Elsewhere in Colorado, Winter Park targets Nov. 16 for its opening, while Vail is scheduled to open on Nov. 18 and Beaver Creek on Nov. 23.

Farther west, Arizona Snowbowl has put off the debut its first high-speed chair until temps get colder, while Mammoth Mountain says it will open on the same day as Loveland. A slew of Tahoe-area and Utah resorts contend they will have lifts running by Nov. 18 – if weather permits.
