Love Is In The Mountains For Valentine’s Day/Weekend
You just might fall in love with some of the deals awaiting you and your loved one in the mountains all across America. Here’s a sampling:
The “king and queen” of Valentine’s Day celebrations occurs annually at Colorado’s Loveland Ski Resort.
This year marks the 22nd annual “Marry Me & Ski For Free Mountaintop Matrimony”, Feb. 14 at noon outside the Ptarmagin Roost Cabin. Participants must sign up the morning of the event and – along with their guests – be able to ski or snowboard down the hill.
The mass wedding ceremony is for couples getting married or renewing their vows. Participants must have a valid Colorado Marriage License and bring it to the ceremony to be signed. Remember to dress warmly in “ski wedding” attire as the ceremony will be held regardless of the weather.
There will be a casual after party following the ceremony with cake, music and prizes, beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the base of Loveland Basin. Pre-registered couples are eligible for the $61 “2 for 1” lift tickets day of the event, and complimentary wedding cake, raffle tickets and beer coupons. Gunnison-Crested Butte, Colo., celebrates with its annual “Romance in the Rockies” Feb. 13-17. There's a 5-course special dinner at the Yurt, arriving there by cross-country skis or snowshoes, at $70 per adult, Feb. 14.
Feb. 16 is the Twister of Love Chairlift Speed Dating beginning at 11 a.m. Numbers are randomly drawn to establish the Twister chairlift lineup loading every two minutes with participants entered to win a raffle contest each time they load with a speed date. Prizes also given for Best Pick-Up Line, Best Dressed, Prince Charming and Miss Congeniality.
The Ruby at Crested Butte B’n’B offers a two-night “Romance at the Ruby” package including rose petals, chocolate covered strawberries, champagne, a 60-minute aromatherapy massage for two and a gourmet breakfast in bed starting at $510 a couple between Feb. 4-15. The Three Rivers Resort package includes two nights plus dinner for two ($50 gift certificate). Accommodations range from a lodge room to cabin starting at $110. Valid Feb. 14-18.
Love In California
California sister resorts Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows celebrate Valentine’s Day with several activities: Meet other singles on Squaw’s KT-22 chairlift from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., or find red velvet hidden heart bags scattered around the mountain at Squaw and Alpine Meadows filled with chocolates and candies, along with 2012-13 lift tickets.
Alpine gives you the opportunity to meet your match with a numbered sticker. Find the matching number while you are riding or skiing, then bring him or her to the Last Chair Bar for discounted drink specials.
Homewood Mountain Resort in Tahoe is encouraging couples to say, “I do, with a view.” Choose from these packages: "Mountain Elopement Package" includes an on-mountain service with minister, marriage license and certified license copy for $300; the "Chairlift to Marital Bliss Package" includes the Mountain Elopement Package plus two Homewood Valentine’s Day-only lift tickets and dinner for two ($100 dining credit) at Homewood’s lakefront West Shore Café and Inn, $500.
Or, the "Ultimate Tahoe Experience Package", which includes the previous two packages, plus lodging at the West Shore Café and Inn that night for $650. Services will be conducted between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.; wedding guests must be able to ski or snowboard to access the ceremony site.
Snow Kisses In Northwest
Idaho’s Sun Valley is serving special sweetheart dinners in the Lodge Dining Room from 6-9 p.m. and will include a Sun Valley Sweetheart Martini, music for dancing, Valentine souvenirs; the Ram Restaurant will have a special 4-course prix fixe menu from 6-9:30 p.m., with piano music, and roses for all the ladies. Take a sleigh to the Trail Creek Cabin for dinner from 5:30-9:30 p.m., enjoy the strolling accordionist and red roses for the ladies.
There’s also a "Sweetheart of a Deal Package" for a room in the Sun Valley Lodge or Inn Feb. 14 for $174. It includes breakfast and box of chocolates.
Oregon’s Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood offers a "Valentine’s Sweetheart Package" for $280. Reserve a Timberline Queen Room, or larger, and get a special 5-course dinner for two in the Cascade Dining Room and six chocolate dipped strawberries in your room upon arrival. The package is valid only Feb. 14, 2013. It’s a bargain as just the dinner by itself is $69.95 per person.
British Columbia’s Big White Ski Resort provides Bullet Chair Speed Dating Feb. 14; or dinner and horse sleigh ride which includes a 3-course dinner for two at the Kettle Valley Steak House and a 30-minute ride for $60 per person.
Reserve a private roundtrip gondola ride for two, complete with candles, music, glass of champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries for $18 per couple. You also can show off your trivia knowledge by competing against other couples and win some great prizes if you make it through to the last round.
Quebec’s Mont Sutton celebrates Valentine’s Day from Feb. 14-17. Sit in the “love seat” any one of those days and you win a special treat. Share the Bar Le Tucker’s “love cocktail” or get your surprise from Chocolat Vadebonceur at Customer Service. Enter the “love photo” contest with a chance to win a getaway at the Auberge D&K in Sutton Sat., Feb. 16. Search for hidden hearts on the mountain and win a prize Sun., Feb. 17.
New England Smooching
New Hampshire’s Cranmore is offering a $14 lift ticket Feb. 14 with an e-coupon. Bromley Mountain in Vermont, also is offering an e-coupon Valentine’s Day special by offering 2-for-1 lift tickets. Coupon must be printed 48 hours in advance.
Spread the love to your four-legged friends. Jackson, N.H.’s Muddy Paw Sled Dog Kennel is hosting a Puppy Love Dog Sledding Valentine’s Day Special, Feb. 11-14. It’s a 3-hour tour that covers 15-22 miles of scenic, backwoods trails. The sled team is made up of more than 100 rescue and second chance sled dogs. Cost is $350 per sled; mention “Puppy Love” when booking and receive a 10 percent discount.
Vermont’s Mount Snow Resort invites couples wanting to renew their vows or get married for the first time to Cloud Nine Nuptials, Feb. 14. It begins with a procession up the Sundance Quad where a local justice of the peace awaits the couples standing around a giant snow heart. After the ceremony, head for the Summit Lodge for a complimentary reception. Save on lift tickets that are priced 2-for-$49 when purchased in advance online.
Couples can renew their vows Feb. 14 at New York’s Hunter Mountain at the top of the mountain, officiated by Karen Monk of the Kaaterskill United Methodist Church. A reception follows at the summit lodge. Participants and guests must be able to ski or snowboard from the ceremony site.
Extend your “renewal” time together at the Kaatskill Mountain Club starting at $100 Feb. 13 or 14 and receive a complimentary champagne split and discount on a couple’s message at the Mountain Club Spa. Advanced reservations are required. Van Winkle’s Restaurant is preparing a special Valentine’s Day menu.
The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., has a Valentine’s Day Package Feb. 13-17. It includes luxury accommodations (1 night minimum; 5 night max), a champagne and chocolate amenity and rose petal turndown arrival night, breakfast in the main dining room, one professional “couples portrait,” and a $100 resort credit (per room, per night), plus discounts on spa services, and horse-drawn carriage rides. One night double occupancy starts at $405.
The Homestead in Mich., next to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, has a "Romance Package" that includes two nights of lodging, dinner for two at Nonna’s, a duet massage with a glass of wine and chocolates, and a $90 voucher for the salon Lillyjade. Prices start at $156 per person, per night. The package is available through March 10.
