Lake Placid's Andrew Weibrecht Second In Kitz World Cup Super G
Andrew Weibrecht from Lake Placid, N.Y. grabbed his second, and most prestigious, super G podium result of his career finishing second in Friday’s Audi FIS Ski World Cup on the classic Hahnenkamm track at Kitzbuehel, Austria.
“I couldn’t be happier. It’s awesome,” said Weibrecht. “Growing up everybody thinks about getting on the podium at Kitzbuehel. Today is a dream come true.”
Norway’s Aksel Lund Svindal won the race, and scored his 15th career World Cup super G victory. Austria’s Hannes Reichelt was third. Friday’s super G also served as the first leg of the alpine combined and is followed with an afternoon slalom race.
The men will take on the fabled Streif Saturday with the downhill. Some 50,000 ski racing fans are expected.
Meanwhile, in Cortina, Italy the women race a downhill and super G. Lindsey Vonn, now just 50 points behind Switzerland’s Lara Gut in the overall, has an opportunity to re-take the lead and break the current downhill win record of 36 victories with a downhill win Saturday. The women then race super G Sunday.
