More Snow Belts East Assuring Many January Events
The relentless lineup of eastern storms, that attacked the region in alphabetical order, will provide skiers and riders with conditions and length of season that could rival last winter. In a number of resorts, the additional snow cover will act as insurance for some key events that are on the January schedule.
Freshies were welcomed in the Adirondacks as last chance for World Cup mogul skiers to qualify for Sochi comes up Jan. 15 at Whiteface Mountain near Lake Placid, N.Y. The United States Ski Team will announce its’ Olympic nominations after the men’s and women’s events on the Wilderness trail. A lift ticket or season pass is all one needs to ski up to the course and get a close-up look of defending Olympic champion and New Englander Hannah Kearney.
On Jan. 20, Pats Peak in New Hampshire hosts the 13th annual Diversity Day, which will be celebrated from 3 p.m. - 9 p.m. in conjunction with Martin Luther King weekend. The cost is $48 for skiers and riders to enjoy skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, rentals and lesson tips.
Mount Pleasant, near Pittsburgh, Pa., continues its University Night on Mondays. Bring your college identification and get a lift ticket for half price. Two-for-Tuesday gets you and your BFF (best friend forever) to the hill for the price of one.
Lake-effect snow paralyzed some areas of western New York for several days early in the week. This caused Gov. Andrew Cuomo to declare a state of emergency for that part of the state.
When the poor visibility cleared, snow sports enthusiasts to the lee of lakes Erie and Ontario saw two to three feet of powder bringing skiers and riders to a state of nirvana in places such as Dry Hill (over 16 inches), Snow Ridge (20-42 inch base prior to the storms) and McCauley Mountain (20 inches).
Song Mountain in central N.Y. was helped as weather enabled the facility to open virtually all trails, while members of the military were happy for the lake effect dumps that hit Snow Ridge in the Tug Hill Plateau. The resort is not far from the 10th Mountain Division installation at Fort Drum, N.Y. Snow Ridge welcomes soldiers with free lift tickets each Wednesday.
