It’s Winter In Arizona, Too; Resorts Roll Out Specials, Deals For The Season
What appears to be a La Niña winter in the West has put smiles on the faces of skiers and snowboarders who live and play at Arizona’s three winter resorts.
A southern-trending storm on New Year’s Day laid down 17 inches at Arizona Snowbowl, 14 inches at Sunrise Park and 13 inches at Mount Lemmon Ski Valley -- giving all three mountains a good start for 2015. Plus, persistently cold temperatures during the second half of December allowed resorts to crank up the snowmaking all over their trail map.
Each mountain lays out special deals and attraction to get skiers and riders out of the desert and into the mountains. Here’s a look at some of them:
Mount Lemmon: This tidy ski area high above Tucson has a $70 special for first-timers, including lesson, ticket and rentals. The ownership also is selling vintage chairs from its original, circa-1970 chairlift. Cost is $300 a chair. Call (520) 576-1321 or email for more information.
Sunrise Park: A new Discovery Zone in this White Mountain ski area focuses on getting both adults and kids 12 and under excited about skiing and snowboarding with one- or three-day sessions. The terrain-based learning center has six areas with sculptures and other features. Sunrise Park ski school guarantees success in basic moves (for instance, stopping and turning on skis and riding beginner lift) or participants get another day of instruction free. The ski school also offers “beyond the first day” and private lessons designed to get everyone to step it up a notch in skill.
Arizona Snowbowl: With no lodging right at the base of the area, the Flagstaff-area ski and snowboard mountain has deals set up with Ski Lift Lodge, the closest accommodation to the lifts and owned by Snowbowl. An overnight stay is free Jan. 11-15 with purchase of $62 day ticket by up to four guests. All season long, a night’s stay at the lodge yields 25 percent off a lift ticket. Also, kids 7 and under and oldsters 70 and older always ski free at Snowbowl. Groups of 10 or more get deep ticket discounts, birthday boys and girls ski and ride for free, and those with military IDs get $5 off tickets or lessons. Plenty of additional lodging is available at nearby Flagstaff.
