It's Spring Break Time In Minnesota’s Arrowhead
March is spring break season for many school districts throughout the Midwest. If you’re looking for variety of terrain, reliable snow and some attractive lift and lodging packages, check out two resorts in Minnesota’s Arrowhead: Both Lutsen Mountains and Giants Ridge are an easy drive from most Heartland locations.
More than a foot of fresh snow in the past couple weeks has left terrain and conditions in mid-winter form despite the looming arrival of spring on the calendar.
Travel Blue Book calls Lutsen Mountains one of the “Top Five Ski Resorts You May Not Have Heard Of,” and goes on to say, “you don’t have time for a trip to the Rockies before season end, look no further than Lutsen.” It offers 1,000 skiable acres and 95 runs coming off the resort’s four mountain peaks, each offering breathtaking views of Lake Superior. Add in a vertical drop near 900 feet, a new six-seat, high-speed lift, and mid-America’s only gondola and you have some of the best skiing and riding around the Great Lakes, according to the book.
Lutsen also has one of the longest seasons in the Heartland, opening mid-November and routinely staying open through mid-April. They plan on keeping at least 40 runs open daily through April 12. They skied into early May last season.
The resort is offering a variety of lift and lodging packages through the end of the season, including family packages where kids 6-12, ski, stay, eat and rent free with parents; half-price weekdays, stay three or more days and lift and lodging is half-rice; free long weekends, stay and ski three or more days and get one day lift and lodging free.
Giants Ridge, located on the Arrowhead's Mesabi Iron Range known for its bone-chilling cold, is offering attractive season ending lift and lodging specials and some of the best March snow conditions in years. By March temperatures are starting to moderate, offering great spring skiing and riding.
Lift and lodging packages also abound this time of year. Midweek enjoy a night’s stay including lift tickets for two days, starting from $95 per person, per night. Two nights lodging and two days skiing or riding start from $136 per person. Kids six and under stay and ski free every day. The Ridge, with the great season, is planning to stay open into April for the second year in a row, weather permitting.
