Insider's Guide To Shanty Creek

Families feel at home on the Summit's slopes. (Shanty Creek)

Michigan's Shanty Creek offers a little taste of Europe, where they are used to skiing from village to village. Spanning 4,500 acres and offering three distinct villages--The Summit, Cedar Creek and Schuss Mountain— you can cross country ski between and all offer access to the slopes.

The resort, between the Summit and Schuss Mountain, offers 50 downhill runs, six terrain parks and 30K of groomed cross country trails an excellent shuttle system connecting all the villages and ski slopes.

Shanty Creek Lakeview Dining Room

EatThe Restaurant in the Summit Village Lakeview Hotel offers spectacular views of the slopes and Lake Bellaire. It’s a popular local dinner spot, especially if you catch a sunset over the lake far below. The Twisted Pasta with lumps of lobster and crab is their go to dish. The River Bistro at Cedar River Lodge also offers tasty breakfast, lunch and dinners. The local whitefish dinner or smoked short rib dinner are both popular choices. A trip down to Bellaire’s Short’s Brewery, one of the most popular in the state, is always a must. Great craft suds and the bar is reminiscent of the old time bars you find in Crested Butte.

Stay. The best lodging choices, both slopeside, are the 85-room Lodge at Cedar River with the ski and snowboard rental facility conveniently located in the lower level, and the 188-room Lakeview Hotel in the Summit Village with pools, fitness center and spa, and rentals located on the lower level.

The top of Schuss Mountain looks out over northern Michigan.

Trails. The Schuss Mountain slopes are the most challenging. The front side offers a handful of advanced runs that range from steep open slopes to narrow, quick tree-lined trails. The backside slopes are a nice collection of intermediate cruisers and advanced glades. Long beginner trails meander around the outside. Four terrain parks are scattered around the Mountain. The Summit slopes, which offer scenic views of Lake Bellaire, are wide, forgiving and perfect for beginners and families with small children.

PlayThe resort offers 30K of excellent groomed cross country trails for both skate and classic. There are also trails for snowshoeing and fat tire biking. Rentals are available for all three snowsports. Snow tubing is available and snowmobile rentals are available. The resort is also fido friendly.
