Insider's Guide To Okemo Mountain Resort
Okemo's Sunburst Six makes riding the lift a pleasure. (Okemo)
Vermont's Okemo is all about making it easy and comfortable to be out having fun in the snow. The Sunburst Six and Quantum Four signature-orange bubble lifts make getting to the top of the mountain a pleasure. And to load the lift, glide through special gates equipped with RFID readers that can be stowed safely inside jackets or pants pockets.
Eat. Stop at Epic at the Solitude Lodge for a sophisticated yet fun lunch break. Warm up with the Japanese Hot Pot served in an artisan-crafted bowl with locally produced ramen. Then, because it’s so hard to decide on one entree, sample a trio of lunch specialties with the Local Lunch Trio, Epic’s signature, three-portion tasting.
Stay. The Jackson Gore Village gives you slopeside access, along with an easy walk to the Adventure Zone, indoor/outdoor pools, firepit, child care and retail shops. Enjoy the Spring House Pool & Fitness Center, the Ice House tennis and basketball courts, and on-site dining options at the Coleman Brook Tavern.
Trails. Okemo’s groomer operators typically start their overnight shift at the South Face area and work their way across the mountain to Jackson Gore. If you want the freshest corduroy on the mountain, start your day at Jackson Gore. Work out the kinks on the corduroy carpet of Tuckered Out before choosing a cruiser like Limelight or rip it up beneath the bubble chairs on Quantum Leap.
If it’s powder you seek, find the deepest fluff on the groomers at South Face and the best stashes on Double Diamond and Outrage and under the chair on Upper Wild Thing – which is rarely touched by groomers.
With a turn off the fall line or veer away from the flow of traffic, you may find you have a great trail all to yourself. At South Face, yielding more to the right makes it more likely you’ll be rewarded with a solitary run down Off the Rim.
Play. Okemo’s Timber Ripper Mountain Coaster is a thrilling ride through an alpine landscape. Cars that carry one or two people glide smoothly on tubular rails that follow the natural contours of the mountain, twisting and turning between trees and along giant, banking corkscrew turns. Passengers control their speed, making each ride a distinct experience down the mountain.
Travel. For $45 one-way or $80 round-trip, overnight guests that stay with Okemo-managed lodging properties can get a shuttle from Southern Vermont Regional Airport, Rutland Amtrak Station or Bellows Falls Amtrak Station. Book when you reserve your stay.
