Pre-season rates are in effect and carts are allowed on the course until June 24 as the Whiteface Club and Resort Golf Course opens for its 114th year in the Adirondack Mountains of New York.
The popular course is set on the shores of Lake Placid and is part-owned by the Mirror Lake Inn, a AAA four-diamond property. No lodging property in New York State has retained the four-diamond designation longer than Mirror Lake Inn’s 28 consecutive years.
The golf course has a unique layout, including a stunning view of Whiteface Mountain from the sixth tee and is known to reward straight shooters. It was originally built in 1898. Noted architect John Van Kleek redesigned the course after consulting with World Champion Walter Hagen.
The club was a recent site of the New York State Senior Women’s Amateur Championship; the 2011 Sunbelt Senior Tour and will host the J. Peter Martin Whiteface Open July 14-15, 2012. Martin, a member of the Northeastern New York PGA Hall of Fame, is director of the Golf Club. The Sunbelt tour returns Aug. 28-31.
The Café on the Green, adjacent to practice green, will be open for lunch Wednesdays through Sundays from 11:30-3 p.m. Hours will be extended after June 15.
The season continues to come alive in Lake Placid with the Tennis Center opening later this month and lessons in sailing, canoeing, and kayaking offered at the marina in June. The Moose Lodge Boathouse overlooking the lake opens May 25. Stay and Play packages at the Mirror Lake Inn, offering spring value deals, are now available at 518-523-2544.
