Heartland Ski Resorts Ready To Celebrate The Holidays

Christmas Snow Monsters Crystal Mt.

The long-range forecast looks good for a snowy Christmas across the Heartland, and that good news couldn’t come at a better time as Midwest ski resorts get ready to celebrate the holiday season.

Boyne Mountain and Highlands 12 days of Christmas start Friday, Dec. 21 with their annual 6for1 Day when six people ski or ride for the price of one at both locations. It celebrates the Mountain’s high-speed, six-seat lift, which was the first one installed in North American in the early 1990s. A full slate of activities will be occurring daily; zipline tours, horseback trail rides, horse drawn wagon rides, dog sled rides, live entertainment, special children’s activities, Christmas buffets, New Year’s Eve parties, and Avalanche Indoor Waterpark daily at the Mountain and a Holiday Rail Jam on Saturday, Dec. 29.

The Highlands is offering a $108 lift and lodging package, per person, per night, Dec. 21-26.  It includes an overnight, lift ticket and buffet breakfast. Take advantage of the 6for1 offer, spend the night and ski or ride the next day as part of the overnight package.

At Shanty Creek you can ski and ride Christmas Day with Santa for free, it’s on the Jolly Old Elf and the Creek. There are New Year’s Eve parties at both The Summit and Ivan’s, and a special New Year’s Eve party just for kids 6-12. Lift and lodging packages start from $158 per adult, per night, including breakfast Dec. 26-28, and $460 per adult, for a three-night stay Dec. 26 – Jan. 1, including one breakfast. New runs were added this past summer, a Big Air Park has been added this season and tubing expanded.

Crystal Mountain will be holding a Santa NASTAR Dec. 24. They will be featuring live entertainment throughout the holidays, a Christmas buffet, a ski and snowboard demo day on Dec. 29, and New Year’s Eve parties with a torch light parade. Unlimited Ski & Ride Packages start from $149 per adult, per night.  Children eight and under sleep, ski/ride and eat breakfast free when staying with adults. Up to two children 9-17 sleep and ski/ride free on the package.  Additional children, 9-17, can be added for $21 per night. Stay three nights and get a fourth night free over Christmas; over New Year’s Eve spend four nights and get a fifth free.

Crystal is the only resort in the Heartland that has added snowbike, mountain bikes with “fat” tires, rentals to its activity list, and they have dedicated snowbike trails available to ride.

Ski Brule is kicking off the season with $60 Carload Days this weekend, Dec. 15-16. Load up your car or truck, pay $60 and everyone gets a lift ticket for the day. No busses please. Two nights lodging is available for the price of one night over the weekend. Time is also running out on Brule’s advance online lift ticket sale. Lift tickets can be purchased online through Dec. 24 for $32 each. A lift ticket at the window will be $42 this season.

Brule will be featuring daily night skiing and riding throughout the holidays. There’s a tree decorating social, marshmallow roasts, live music nightly in the Brule Saloon, tubing and sleigh rides, a New Year’s dinner and Homestead BBQ’s on selected nights.

Devil’s Head Resort in the Baraboo Bluffs region of Wisconsin is hosting a huge New Year’s Eve celebration, one of the best in the Heartland in my opinion. The cost is $488 per person and includes three nights of lodging, three dinners in the Cornucopia Room (one of my favorite Midwest resort restaurants), two breakfasts or lunches if you’re a late riser, a Strawberry Champagne Bruch on New Year’s Day, four day lift tickets per person, and a free bottle of champagne. Children can be added for $211. There are live bands, a fireworks display at midnight and a torchlight parade, and a kid’s night out party so the parents can enjoy themselves.

Chestnut Mountain, near Galena overlooking the Mississippi River, offers some of the most scenic skiing in the Midwest overlooking three states and North America’s longest river. Chestnut is offering a couple of holiday lift and lodging packages. The Holiday Ski Package starts from $399 per person, based on double occupancy. Additional people can be added for $249 each. The package includes two nights of lodging, two breakfast and lunches, one dinner, a three-day lift ticket per person, and a group ski/board lesson. It’s available Dec. 21-29. A two-day New Year’s Eve Package, from $449 per person, is available Dec. 30 – Jan. 1, 2013. It includes two nights of lodging, two breakfasts and lunches, one dinner, a three-day lift ticket per person, and a group lesson.
