Granite Peak Family Festival

Take that old adage, “families that play together, stay together,” and apply it to Granite Peak. Wisconsin’s largest ski area has your family ski trip covered this winter.

Granite Peak is hosting three affordable Family Festival Weekend Packages Jan. 11-13, Feb. 1-3, and March 8-10.  The package, which starts from $494 for a family of four, includes two nights' lodging, two days worth of lift tickets, ski and snowboard rental for the entire family, horse drawn wagon rides, a Saturday night bonfire and fireworks display.

There’s something for all family members. New beginner terrain and a conveyor lift were recently added, which more than doubled the beginner terrain. An easier mogul field and rollers were added as a progression park, and an Enchanted Forest Trail with animal figures is available for little skiers and riders. Rocky chutes on the upper mountain attract expert skiers. Scenic trails, some stretching a mile-and-a-half in length, meander down the mountainside.

With two high-speed lifts, nearly 80 trails and a 700-foot vertical drop, it’s big time skiing and riding for the Heartland. Base facilities include the historic Tenth Mountain Chalet, which is augmented by the 10,000-square-foot Sundance Chalet and a new outside patio area that features textured color-concrete, overhead heaters, an outdoor grill and seating for 400. The area’s terrain parks have been rated among the best in the Heartland by Transworld Snowboarding magazine.

Granite Peak does not have lodging, but works through a variety of nearby motels, hotels and quaint B&Bs that package with the ski area. Wausau is a neat Midwest ski town.  Scattered around the base of the mountain it offers, in addition to a wide number of lodging choices, an excellent selection of restaurants for all price levels and a vibrant, active downtown with lots of cultural events, international entertainment and museums.

Other winter attractions around the area include Sylvan Hill Winter Recreation Area, which offers the longest tubing runs in the state, and some of the steepest runs. It features six chutes with two tow lines to keep tubers moving. Nine Mile Forest, one of Wisconsin’s top cross country centers, provides 33 kilometers of double-tracked, skate-lane trails for all levels of skiers.
