Going Fishing? Gunnison-Crested Butte Angling Season Begins

Gunnison Angling Society/Superfly 2012

The area’s 2013 fishing officially opens in May. Summer and fall feature three fly fishing tournaments and two kid-friendly derbies.

The Weekend Warrior Outdoors & Gunnison Chamber Fishing Tournament is May 18-19 on Blue Mesa Lake. Eighty spots are available for teams of two (three if any member under 16) fishing for rainbow and brown trout and Kokanee salmon, at $120 per team.

The city of Gunnison hosts the Kids Fishing Derby & Outdoor Sports Expo June 1 at Jorgensen Park. Kids up to middle school age can use their own equipment or poles lures, hooks and bait that will be provided. Call 970-641-8060 for more information.

The annual Taylor Park Marina Fishing Derby June 22 has a division for kids under 15 with no entry fee and non-cash prize awards. The cost for all others is $35 with a door prize for all.

The 12th annual Caddis Cup Fly Fishing Tournament  July 12-13 vies for capture of the largest brown trout, largest rainbow trout and most aggregate inches. Registration is $600 and includes a kick-off BBQ, box lunch, auction, full day of guided fishing, shirt, goodie bag and awards party. Tickets for just the BBQ and auction is $75. The tournament benefits the Crested Butte Land Trust.

The newest fishing event on the schedule – Bridge to Bridge Fly Fishing Tournament  – is July 20 on the Gunnison River. Early registration is $80 per team; day of event is $90 per team. The total length of all fish caught and released decide the winner of a cash purse and prizes. Proceeds benefit the Gunnison River Festival.

The season wraps up with the Superfly Fishing Tournament Sept. 6-7 open to all ages and skill levels.  This is a classic two-fly contest with each two-person team choosing two flies that will be used for the entire tournament. There will be a Friday night reception and banquet and awards ceremony Saturday. Registration fee is $600 per team and includes several meals and a fishing shirt.

Not into tournaments? Try the guided power boat fishing on Taylor Reservoir for trout, pike, and mackinaw. Cost is $450 for two people all day or a half-day for up to three people for $400, and includes all gear.
