Get Ski, Snowboard Fever Throughout West During January; Special Deals

Here’s a New Year’s resolution to work on: Take to the slopes to learn to ski or ride at any of dozens of winter resorts in the Rockies, Sierras and Cascades.

 

To kick off your commitment, January 2014 is officially Learn To Ski &Snowboard Month – a five-year-old industry partnership to promote the introduction of the sport. In the West, about two dozen resorts offer deals specifically for newbies. Here are some of them:

 

Homewood (No. Calif.): First-time skiers and snowboarders 13 and older receive a 2-1/2 hour beginner lesson, beginner lift ticket and all-day equipment rentals for $44 each. 

 

Mt. Rose  Ski Tahoe (No. Calif.): First Timer packages are $69 per person ($67 if you reserve online) and include beginner lift ticket, 90-minute lesson and rental equipment (ages 7 and older).

 

Snow Summit and Bear Mountain (So. Calif.): Free rentals to newbies eight years and older in January (except Jan. 7, 8, 14-16) who buy beginner lesson that begin at $49.

 

Bogus Basin (Idaho): Four lessons for 1-3/4 hours each, equipment rental and usage after lesson, and season pass for $229-249. 

 

Mt Hood Meadows (Oregon): Three-day ($139), three-night ($79), one-day ($70) and one-night ($35) packages all for 13 years and older and include lift ticket, two-hour lesson and rentals.

 

Ski New Mexico: For $30 per day, children 6 to 12 years old get ticket, lesson and rental from Angel Fire, Pajarito, Red River, Ski Santa Fe, Sandia Peak, Ski Apache, Sipapu, Taos Ski Valley and Enchanted Forest. The program runs through Jan. 31.

 

Brian Head Ski Resort (Utah): For $45, newbies get two-hour lesson, rentals and a lift ticket. Participants will also receive a bounce-back coupon for two $45 Get Better lessons that, if completed, mean 50 percent off season pass and rentals.

 

Eagle Point (Utah):For ticket, lesson and rentals, adult all-day package is $59, children’s is $64 and half-day costs $39.

 

Arapahoe Basin (Colo.): All four Sundays in January and February offer up ticket, lesson and rental for $99 skiing, $107 snowboarding for adult; $79 and $84 for kids.

 

Crested Butte (Colo.): A $59 beginner ski or ride package for ages 15 and up includes limited–access ticket, rentals and lesson.
