Fun Of Luge Racing Comes To Pa., N.Y. Ski Areas
Always wanted to try luge racing? Here’s your chance. First-time racers (age 10 and older) can experience the sport at Blue Mountain, Pa. Feb. 2-3; Thunder Ridge, N.Y. Feb. 23-24; and Whiteface, N.Y., March 2-3.
It’s the USA Luge Challenge and first-timers can try their hands at what is dubbed “the fastest sport on ice”® under the safe guidance of USA Luge Olympians, international medalists and coaches.
Participation in all three events is free and no experience or lift ticket is required. Registration begins at 9 a.m. each day. Coaches and others will be scouting each event for young, promising athletes. Some may be invited to USA Luge screening camps at the training facilities in Lake Placid and Park City, Utah.
Adults and children age 10 and under can take practice runs on a recreational version of a luge sled down a track complete with curves and timing equipment. But, that’s only learning the basics of accelerating, steering and stopping.
The Blue Mt. weekend in Palmerton, Pa. is sponsored by Country Inn and Suites by Carlson in nearby Lehighton. The Thunder Ridge weekend in Patterson, N.Y. is sponsored by Connecticut Family Orthopedics. The Whiteface event in Wilmington is 10 miles from Lake Placid, N.Y.
Prizes drawings will be held for CW-X, Dow Chemical, USANA, Valiant Entertainment, lift tickets, USA Luge merchandise and more. U-Haul is enabling USA Luge to make the trips from its Lake Placid headquarters.
