Fly In And Hit Slopes On Same Day
Tetons loom over Jackson Hole airport. (Jackson Hole Airport/Facebook)
Vacationing skiers and snowboarders can be an anxious lot. They want to get the most runs possible in the time they have, so getting out of the airport quickly and onto the slopes as soon as possible is paramount.
If you get in early enough, a bunch of resorts are close enough to get your legs under you by the end of the day. So, SnoCountry.com went looking for the destinations that make that possible. First, major international airports:
Salt Lake City. No major airport is closer to the slopes than Salt Lake City. Seven resorts are within an hour, and tons of shuttles, buses and private cars stand ready. Unfortunately, no more QuickStart program that gave free ticket with boarding pass. But Utah wants you there to the bitter end, so shuttles run regularly from Alta, Snowbird, Park City and others so you can get that very last run in before departing.
Reno/Lake Tahoe. Many of the Lake Tahoe ski resorts offer free lift tickets the same day you fly in. Just redeem boarding pass at ticket window. Squaw Valley is about 40 miles away. Lake Tahoe shore resorts, including Heavenly, are a bit more than an hour’s drive, and most major hotels have shuttles.
Alaska. Anchorage’s airport is just 40 miles from the lifts at Alyeska Resort. Alaska Airlines links up a free ticket with same-day boarding pass.
A number of regional airports in the West serve major resorts and are located within an hour’s drive of the base of the lifts. Those include:
Jackson Hole. It’s just 35 minutes to the mountain, and car, shuttle, taxi or rental cars stand ready to make the trip.
Steamboat. Always a bit quirky, Steamboat offers same-day free night skiing for travelers coming into Yampa Valley Airport -- 25 miles from the slopes.
Crested Butte. It’s a good half-hour drive from Gunnison airport to Crested Butte. Shuttles and buses available.
