Fire at Mad River Mountain destroys day lodgeFire destroyed the day lodge at Ohio’s Mad River MountainThursday night (Sept. 16), one of Peak Resort’s Midwest ski areas.

The lodge, which is called The Loft, was a total loss, was fully engulfed in the blaze, according to the Logan County’s Sheriff’s Office. Fifteen fire departments from four counties were called out to battle the blaze. No injuries were reported, according to a report in the Columbus Dispatch.

The ski area, which opened in 1962, employs about 240 people during the winter season. A spokesperson for the ski area told a reporter from the Bellefontaine Examiner that, "Mad River has every intention of opening on time this season.”

Mad River employees posted a note on the ski area’s Facebook page that reads, “We are at a loss for words. The Loft was iconic. Thanks to all well wishers, firefighters and public safety.”

The ski area that sits on one of the highest points in the Buckeye State offers a 300-foot vertical and 20 trails spread out over 144-acres. It’s the largest ski area in  Ohio and is well-known as Olympic snowboarder Louie Vito’s home hill. It’s where he grew up learning to snowboard, and he comes back each December to host the Louie Vito Rail Jam.

A member of the Vito family, Linzee Vito, posted on the Facebook page, “My heart is broken. The memories made in that loft with my entire family from learning how to ski and snowboard to the charity event we host every year will forever be remembered. Tonight is a very sad night.”

Peak Resorts, owns and operates five other ski resorts in the Midwest, four in New England and one in Pennsylvania.
