For Utahns and summer visitors, all that's going on during August in the mountains demands that itineraries include a trip into the Wasatch.

Brewfests and concerts grab the headlines, but Utah's ski and snowboard resorts have a broad variety of daily events to inspire and captivate. Here are some:

Cottonwood Canyons Foundation sponsors Alta Kids Day on Aug. 18. At the head of Little Cottonwood Canyon, youngsters and their families get four hours to learn about nature with hands-on activities. Forestry, raptors and environmental stewardship are among the topics at various booths. There's no charge but pre-registration is requested.

Birders can head to Park City for five days at the Utah Birding and Photography Tour Aug. 16-21.  The all-inclusive tour includes transportation to seven bird-watching locales, snacks and water, and all park fees for $1,250 double occupancy. Lodging and meals separate.

For mountain bike fans, the Flyin' Brian Downhill at Brian Head is back on Aug. 14. A pair of downhill races -- with lift rides included -- begin Saturday with the two-mile Downhill and conclude Sunday with the six-mile Super D. Saturday's race is the final of the Utah Gravity Series, so the state champ will be crowned.

Every summer, Brighton Ski Resort hosts the Salt Lake Climbing Fest, this year on Aug. 28. One- and two-day clinics hone rock climbing skills for beginners and seasoned climbers, with tickets starting at $55. And there's yoga, pilates and hikes, plus Saturday night music and dinner. Must be 14 or older.

Spend a couple of hours on the mountainside above Solitude for an informative Geology Hike at Solitude on Sept. 4. Starting with a talk at the base, participants then ride Sunrise Lift for a guided hike through geologic formations until noon. Cost is a lift ticket.
