Eastern Hills Come Alive With Deals

Shawnee Peak Big Air Bag

You’ve made it through the holiday spending season and even took a few days to enjoy the bountiful snow conditions at your favorite eastern winter resort. Now, however, funds might be a bit tight. Never worry.

Snow country understands that dilemma. Bonnie MacPherson, of Okemo Mountain Resort in Vermont jokes that department store magnate John Wanamaker must have been thinking of the snowsports industry when he created the concept of the White Sale.

Okemo has also thrown in the infamous free lunch this month. Book a full price lift ticket at least 48 hours in advance at okemo.com and you can ski weekdays this month (except Jan. 21) with a free lunch anywhere on the mountain that day. Just print the coupon at home and bring it with you to collect the lunch voucher.

Mondays are also popular at Shawnee Peak in Maine. Bring a carload before 11 a.m. and ski the rest of day for $86 total (also not valid Jan. 21). Coming later on Monday? No problem. Get a lift ticket starting at 4 p.m. for $13 per person.

While many areas have price and pass blackouts on Martin Luther King Junior Day, it’s the opposite at Brantling in the Rochester, N.Y. area. The resort in Sodus on Lake Ontario (hint here….lake effect snow) will host a one-day, all day camp for skiers and riders between the ages of six and 18. It includes a lift ticket, lesson for all levels, and rentals, if you are in need. The cost is just $75 for non-pass holders and $48 for season ticket holders.

Wisp Resort in Western Maryland entices you to stretch your weekend into Monday with their $29 Deal Days, every Monday, except Jan. 21. It’s good from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m, and includes rentals and a one hour clinic. Also, note the extra hour on the slopes, whereas most ski and ride areas close at 4 p.m.

Snowshoe Mountain in West Virginia is still reaping the benefits of massive natural snow from Hurricane Sandy in November. Boasting a 75-inch season total, Snowshoe is wide open on deals. Packages including one to three-day lift tickets come with substantial discounts of 47 – 54 percent.Yes, Mr. Wanamaker may have invented the concept, but snow country has taken it to the mountain top.
